What happens in Rabka at Christmas and New Year
The big traditional Polish meal takes place with the family on Christmas Eve. It's a meatless meal, fish takes pride of place in one or several of the 12 or so courses.
Soup, pierogi, carp, pasta with poppy seed, and many other dishes make up this feast. A wafer or flat bread is shared with other guests, each wishing each other wealth, health and happiness or variations.
If you're planning to come for Christmas, you can book your own feast at local restaurants or hotels. Eating out in Poland is inexpensive, so why not make life easy and pleasant?
- Many people will go to Mass at the local church or the following day.
- The feasting naturally continues the next day.
- Musicians and carollers wander the streets wanting to bless your house.
Sylwester or New Year is celebrated in a big way
with food, parties and fireworks. You get an excellent view of the firework displays in Rabka from the balconies in the house.
A big festival is held in Cracow at New Year in the main square, plus there are smaller festivities in other towns. Book far ahead for Sylwester if you plan to go to one of the many dinner dances or organised events.

It is adorned with animal hides and Highland tapestries for a traditional Gorale feel.
