One of the best things about staying in a vacation rental in Poland is the freedom to explore the country at your own convenience and pace, to see visit those places and tourist attractions of interest to you.

The south of Poland, where our self-catering vacation rental is located, is an area of hilly and mountainous terrain between Cracow, Zakopane and Kroscienko and Szczawnica.

This is the land of former shepherds; the Highlander or Gorale people. Today, they still dress up for tourists. You see them in their colorful embroidered woollen national costumes, driving horse and carts, or sleigh rides through the snow, in the regional restaurants, steering rafts on the river Dunajec.

Our holiday home is in the spa and ski town of Rabka Zdroj, about two thirds of the way along the main highway from Cracow to Zakopane.

It's an excellent central base for exploring this part of Poland. Hire a car from the airport, or locally, and every day can be a new adventure.

Holidays in Poland and Gorale

The Highland people or Gorale, dressed in their traditional embroidered woollen trousers and waistcoats are a feature of this part of Poland.

• Take a ride on a horse and cart
• If it's snowing, got to go on a sleigh ride - it's an experience of a lifetime
• Horse drawn trips to Morskie Oko (the 'Eye of the Sea' lake high in the mountains is recommended).
• White water rafting on the Dunajec river steered by Gorale
• Enjoy the regional highland cuisine in one of many Karczmas of regional restaurants

Castles and tourist attractions

If you head in the direction of the Pieninski National Park and Lake Czorsztyn, which you're likely to if you want to go white water rafting or visiting a collection of old wooden churches, many with onion domes.

The countryside is magnificent, you can sail or canoe on the lake, explore castles, eat out in charming country karczmas and have a good time at a low cost.
